Little GEM in the heart of the City!

I think its about time this place gets some recognition!  Since its opening the owners have made it their business to crush the competition.  5 star DJs, a beautiful & drama free atmosphere & great customer service are what separates them from the rest. Introductions and handshakes from the owners night after night is what motivated me to write this blog....... well and a little whisper from my sister wife Sid.  ;-)

Taste Lounge, a sexy, well decorated lounge with a BIG reputation!  What I like about the spot is although the space may be quaint the experience is always phenomenal.  Never, ever have I visited a venue as a patron and was greeted by the Owner/Management!

I have to give a big shout out the Chris, the owner who always makes it a priority to make sure the party-goers are having a good time!  His staff is also very courteous.  Anyone close to me knows I am a stickler for customer service.  Lets start from the entrance at the door:  the bouncers are pleasant and never make you feel like a "criminal."  The waitresses are friendly and even will conduct in a little small talk.  I'm a huge fan of Patronritas (Patron Margaritas) and they make them strong...almost too strong (definitely not a bad thing).  Yes, I'm probably the only person who complains about a drink being too strong....lol.  The party space is always scanned by the staff who make cleanliness a priority.  The females restroom is ALWAYS SPOTLESS!!  Ample amounts of hand soap, hand lotion, AND freshly scented!  BRAVO..... you guys get an A+ for that.  

They host parties for what seems to be every night but I'll touch base on my favorites.

* The Ambiance*
Ultra posh & sexy- ceilings draped in white.  Traditional African print & leather cover the walls!  Lavish light show invades the space in its entirety.  Leather bar stools & benches proves that Management didn't skim on design.  Several private VIP areas for all of you BOTTLE POPPERS!!  As well as VIP tables in the main space.  2 words- TOP NOTCH!!

*The Fashion*

One word- ECLECTIC.  You'll see a little bit of everything.  Suits, traditional African wear,  denim &  vintage wear.  Pretty much everyone's personal style.  Below are some of my fav looks.

Andddddddddd lets talk about the celebrity guests that have blessed Taste with their presence. 2Face Idibia, Banky W, Wande Cole, Jessy Jagz, M.I. & more.  Oh, and that was all in one night!!!  Dee Jay Teffler and Dee Jay T Boogie brought out the hottest Naija artist for Groove Sundays on July 31 (Nigerian DJ Summer Jam weekend).  These 2 DJs have definitely proven themselves here in the DMV.  I witnessed this epic night and I have to say it was one of the best nights I've had in a long time!  Look out for these bad guyz!  On Sunday August 14th they're bringing out X-Project & on August 21st Patrick Jay.  Who else has delivered such grandeur? (I'll wait............lol) 

*The Wrap Up*

Taste Lounge has delivered 100% of the times I've been there!  Rather the celebrities are in the building or not, the party is always jumping!  I have yet to dine here but from what I hear the menu is to die for.  African and Caribbean dishes that are guaranteed to tickle your TASTE buds. If you're looking for a cool chill spot to visit for a few drinks or to bust a whine or 2 Taste is definitely the place! Great location, ambiance, customer service, strong drinks and great music= a night to remember.

:: Where it all started ::

"Been gone for a minute now I'm back with the jump-off!" .....Haha, haven't blogged in a while but the Summer festivities have GIVEN ME LIFE.  This blog post is way over due!


Let's take it back to the basics.  It all started Friday July, 2, 2010.  I was invited to Lux Lounge for a birthday celebration for who is now a very close friend, Siddiqah.  I've been to Lux many times before that night but always headed upstairs (2nd floor) where the Djs spun the hottest in Hip-Hop & R&B.  Never thought twice about partying on the first floor because the music (besides the Reggae) played was unfamiliar to me.  


Well that night literally changed my social life for the better!!  Private table in VIP, bottles flowing from left to right, my glass was never empty & nonstop pictures being taken by the celebrants and private photgraphers as Sid celebrated her bday with a BANG!!!!!  

I've never had so much fun at Lux Lounge.  My past party nights on the 2nd floor wasn't IT!!  Why?  Because hip-hop didn't make my hips whine, jook & sway the way the African beats and Caribbean tunes on the 1st floor did!!!    DJ & Event Promoter Sam Mobit (DJ Chick) and friends (Dee Jay Tee Boogie & DJ Sam I Am) had me hooked.  

I'm dedicating this blog post to the one and only DJ Chick!!! 

Okay forgive me but I have to fast forward a bit. A year later and DJ Chick still has a spot in my heart.  Always lives up to his reputation.  Great parties, venues, music, celebrities & fashion forward people!  Even if the event is outdoors, in the heat & during a heatwave.  Yes a heatwave!!!!  DJ Chick brings people out no matter the circumstances.

Outdoor patio with sand where you can get the feel of the "beach life" in the city and a little sand between those toes.  There's also a gaming area featuring: Pool / Ping Pong / Billiards / Poker / Corn Hole on Bag Toss.  Outdoor projection TVs & ample amount of indoor/outdoor seating.  The menu is to die for!  Gourmet hotdogs, hamburgers, brisket, fries & chicken tenders just to name a few (and enough to get your mouth salivating).

*The Music*

Just to touch on my favorite DJ of the night

 It's pretty much illegal to have 4 out of my 5 favorite DMV DJs at one party!!  Smooth, Sam I AM, Chick and Claude the Martian from Tag Soundz definitely bring the fiyah!  One thing I loved about this event is I was able to discover something about one of them.  I knew he was the King of Coupé Décalé, Kompa & Zouk.  But gee-whiz he also spun some of my favorite tunes from West Africa as well.  Yes, I know to some I must have been under a rock for the last year!  Others may even ask "Did you not know the reason why they call him the number 1 international DJ?"  There's a reason why he's one of my favs- DJ CHICK!!!  

What I loved about him is so many DJs use applications on their fancy MacBook Pros. But before that era I witnessed DJs using that hard plastic.  No not records (I'm a youngin'), but good ol' Compact Discs.  It has been 100+ degrees out lately and he still manages to get everyone up off of their beach chairs!  Providing sets with flawless transitions (one of my pet peeves) and not a lot of talking on the mic.  People are not afraid to get down and embrace the sweat dripping all over their bodies. 

............And who else can bring out JOHN DUMELO, NANA BOROO & MAJID MICHEL all at one party??  Just sayin'!!!!!!!!

*The Fashion*

 What I like about the Sunday Cookout is the fashion forwardness from many.  The ultra-chic relaxed looks of shorts, skirts, rompers, denim & cropped pants are executed well from many.  Of course no matter where you go there are a selected few that "didn't get the memo" or have a "where are your friends?" moment.  But what catches my attentions are the fashionistas/os!!  Below are some of my favorite looks!!

DJ SPOTLIGHT: From Temitope to Dee Jay T Boogie

So excited to have had the opportunity to learn a little bit about this DJ.  When I approached him with the idea he did not hesitate (thx).  Fortunately, the DMV has some of the most diverse DJ's from all the around the world.  This DJ hails from Nigeria but reps the DMV hard!  

This here is the question and answer part of Sassy Night Out!  Sometimes the busy "city" life tends to cause a conflict between the meeting of the minds.   So, I hopped on my favorite gadget (my MacBook Pro) and went to work!  Between google searches and my curiosity I was able to put together 25 questions for Dee Jay T Boogie to answer which was then emailed to him.  

I first discovered him at a BBQ where he was DJing during the Summer of 2010.  He went from R&B to Hip Hop to Reggae to African tunes and back around FLAWLESSLY!  I then followed his presence to Mangos and LUX Lounge where every set played was fiyah!  He officially became one of my favorite DJs!

1.     What’s your real name?
Temitope.  Wow it’s so funny that a lot of people that use to call me by my real name forgot it.
2.     Where did the name T Boogie come from?
When I actually got into DJing my stage name was DJ Temi which is part of my real name. But back in 2002 I had a little get together at my house and one of my friends came up the idea that my DJ name should be Temi Boogie-Low because everybody is boogying to my music.  So in the end I shortened it to T Boogie.
3.     Where do you live?
I live in Clinton Maryland
4.     So how did it all begin?
It all started in middle school.  I have always wanted to know how it felt to control a crowd of people by playing music.
5.     What gave you that initial push?
I had a friend/cousin who was a DJ (DJ Spin It) and I used to ride around with him to wherever he was spinning.
6.     What was the first event you ever played at/put on?
The first major event I ever played at was my high school homecoming dance.
7.     What was the first record you bought?
Wowwwww... it’s been so long but I think it must have been Chaka Demus and Plier “Bam Bam.”
8.     Which other countries have you played/put parties on?
I have done several parties in Nigeria, Ghana and of course here in the United States of America.
9.    In your life,  does DJing come 1st?
Family comes first then my profession.  True talk!
10.   In your opinion, who is throwing the best parties at the moment?
I am not worried about any other parties, all I can say is that my parties are always nice.
11.   What's the best event you've played at/put on?
Every event I’m involved in is considered to be the best.
12.   Out of all the tunes you have, which one 'never fails?
Classic “Bam Bam” and “Murder She Wrote.”  Both are by Chaka Demus and Plier….lol.
13.   What's your favorite tune of all time?
I have a lot of favorite tunes but I love classic songs like “Bookshelf”, “Sting”, “Showtime.” So many I can't name them all.  As for Hip Hop and R&B, “Too Close” & “Wifey” by Next, “Just in Case” by Jaheim and some others.
14.   How big is your vinyl/CD/Electronic collection?
Too much music, my car garage is filled with albums, records & cds.  Wow a lotttttttttttttt!!!
15.   What do you think of CDJ's?
It really doesn't matter what you use for DJing..  As long as the music is cranking you are good to go.
16.   Funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
Hmmmmm. There are lots and lots of funny things. But I remember passing out on the turntable right after the event was over.
17.   When you play is it a pre-planned set?
It’s never pre planed. I just go with the flow by reading the crowd.
18.   Any DJs you respect/look up to?
I have to give respect to DJ Chick, the main guy that started the movement.  Also DJ Preview, DJ Bonfire, DJ Smooth, DJ Sam I Am, DJ Labenz (retired) and so many more others including all Naija DJs.
19.   What are your feelings on the MC's?
MCs help hype up a party.
20.   So how is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
Everyday is always a new scene to me, that’s why I'm still in the game.
21.   What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
Chill and network so I can meet new people.  You always need new faces to keep the party fresh…..lol
22.   What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/?
Find your own swag, create your own style of DJing and also get advice from people that have been in the game longer than you have.  Know that Sky is the limit!
23.   When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
I like to just chill at home, watch sports and movies.  Pretty much relax and clear my mind.
